Paul Mantee (actually Paul Marianetti * 9. January 1931 in San Francisco , California , USA; † 7. November 2013 in Malibu , California, USA) was an American actor and novelist author . His acting career spanned over 120 roles in productions for film and television. He became known in 1964 for his role as Commander Draper in the science fiction classic Emergency Landing in Space and in the 1980s as Detective Al Corassa in 54 episodes of the crime series Cagney & Lacey .

Life

Mantee, born Paul Marianetti in San Francisco in 1931, first graduated from San Mateo Junior College in California with a degree in journalism before he enlisted in the US Navy for four years and fought in the Korean War. There he met people who knew about Hollywood. During this time, his goal matured to turn his childhood dream of becoming an actor into reality.

He made his film debut in 1958 in Norman Taurog's comedy The Onion Head in the small role of a sailor. In 1959 he played a bomber co-pilot in Paul Wendko's war drama Battle in the Coral Sea . But like many other little to unknown actors at the time, Mantee had to take casual jobs in order to stay afloat financially. He played tiny parts in well-known television series or worked alongside in the Hollywood vineyards for several years. But it was precisely that anonymity that gave him an advantage when, in 1964, they were looking for a young, as yet unknown and unused face for the lead role in the science fiction film Emergency Landing in Space , a robinsonade in space , staged by old master director Byron Haskin . Mantee auditioned and got the role of Commander Draper. The film co-stars as Victor Lundin as Friday and Adam West as Col. Dan McReady. A carefully restored version of the science fiction classic based on motifs by Daniel Defoe was produced and published in the USA in 2007 by The Criterion Collection .

This was followed in the 1960s by other smaller and larger roles in cinema productions such as in Sidney Salkow's Western Goldfieber or the drama Murder from second hand by Robert Gist and Only Horses Are Given the Shooting of Grace by Sydney Pollack . He played the male lead again in Richard Rush's action thriller A Certain Dick Daggers in 1968.

In the 1970s, Paul Mantee was seen mostly in supporting roles in action, adventure or horror films such as Henry Levin's crime drama Jefferson Bolt - Traveler in Dynamite , in Tom Grie's thriller The Man Without a Nerve , in Phil Karlson's action crime drama A Man Takes Revenge in the two William Girdler films of the fantastic genre Panic in the Sierra Nova and The Manitou , in Burt Kennedy's thriller Amok Hunt and in the film drama The Great Santini by director Lewis John Carlino .

In the 1980s and 1990s, his appearances in movies became less frequent, but you saw him between 1983 and 1988 in 54 episodes and in a television film in the crime series Cagney & Lacey in 1994 as Detective Al Corassa at the side of Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless and from 1989 to 1991 in seven episodes as Commander Clayton in the series Hunter .

Between 1958 and 1994 he had played numerous episode and guest star appearances in over 75 of the most popular American television series with continuous diligence and a remarkable discipline, preferably in western, crime, adventure or spy games, among others in: Police report (1958 ), West of Santa Fé (1961), 77-Sunset-Strip (1963), Laredo (1966), Batman (1967), Time Tunnel (1967), On the Run (1967), Invasion of Wega (1967), Rackets and Cannons (1968), The Seaview (1968), The People at Shiloh Ranch (1968), Bonanza (1968), FBI (1970), Daniel Boone (1970), Cobra, Take Over You (1971) , Cannon (1971), The Boss (1975), The Streets of San Francisco (1975), Highway Adventure (1974), Mannix (1975), The Badass Five (1975), Bronk (1975), Medical Story (1975) , Zeit der Sehnsucht (1975), Kojak - Einsatz in Manhattan (1976), The Six Million Dollar Man (1977), CHiPs (1977), Barnaby Jones (1977), Vegas (1979), B uck Rogers (1980), Simon and Simon (1982), Quincy (1982), Dallas (1983), Trapper John, MD (1983), The A-Team (1984), Agent with a Heart (1984), TJ Hooker (1985 ), The Cases of Harry Fox ( 1985), Remington Steele (1985), A Colt for All Cases (1983), Hunter (1989), LA Law (1990) or Murder Is Her Hobby (1994).

In 1998 he retired from the film business.
