Sidney Salkow

Sidney Salkow (born June 16, 1909 in New York City , New York , † October 18, 2000 in Valley Village , Los Angeles , California ) was an American film and television director , film producer and screenwriter , who was primarily low- Made budget films .

life and work

Sidney Salkow studied at City College of New York , of Columbia University and Harvard Law School Law . After finishing school, he returned to New York City, where he worked at the theater as an assistant director and later as a director.

In 1932 Salkow went to Hollywood in the film industry, where he worked as a screenwriter and writer of dialogues. He worked his way up quickly, becoming an assistant director and eventually a writer and director of short films. He made his first feature film , Four Day's Wonder , in 1936 for Universal Studios . From 1937 he took over the management of B-productions for Republic Pictures and worked there for two years. In early 1940 he went to Columbia Pictures and worked there mainly on B-movies , such as the " The Lone Wolf " mystery series and The Adventures of Martin Eden (1942), based on the book by Jack London . In 1943 he made the anti-war film The Boy from Stalingrad based on a story by Robert Lee Johnson .

Salkow always managed to make his films look more elaborate than his budget would have allowed him. Examples include films like, Count Orloff's Dangerous Love ( Shadow of the Eagle , 1950), Lady Rotkopf ( The Golden Hawk , 1952), and King of the Pirates ( Raiders of the Seven Seas , 1954). He is also working on big productions, like the poison of evil ( Twice-Told Tales , 1963) and his most tester film, the Italian co-production The Last Man on Earth ( The Last Man on Earth , 1964) by Richard Matheson's short story " I Am Legend ”, in which Vincent Price plays the leading role. In the 1964 western In Montana, all hell is going on (The Quick Gun) he starred with World War II heroes Audie Murphy .

During his career, Salkow also worked on many television series such as Lassie , Fury , 77 Sunset Strip and This Is Alice .

At the age of 59, Salkow said goodbye to the director's chair. His last film was The Murder Game in 1965 for 20th Century Fox . He then went to California State University, Northridge, to teach film.

Sidney Salkow died of natural causes on October 18, 2000, at the age of 91 in Valley Village, California.
