Richard Matheson (2008)

Richard Burton Matheson (born February 20, 1926 in Allendale , New Jersey , † June 23, 2013 in Calabasas , California ) was an American science fiction and screenwriter . He also published under the pseudonym Logan Swanson .

Life

Born in New Jersey in 1926, Matheson grew up in Brooklyn , New York City .

Matheson studied journalism at the University of Missouri . Its first publication in 1950 put it in the light of science fiction history. With Born of Man and Woman he landed a classic in the Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction . His unique style of combining science fiction and horror found expression in numerous story collections.

Since 1951 he lived in California . In 1952 he married Ruth Ann Woodson. The marriage produced four children, including sons Chris , Richard Christian and Ali Marie Matheson , who are also active as a writer .

His first novel I Am Legend (1954) was filmed several times. In the first film adaptation from 1963 under the title The Last Man on Earth , Vincent Price took on the lead role. It was filmed in 1971 under the title The Omega Man with Charlton Heston and again in 2007 as I Am Legend with Will Smith . For the film adaptation of his second novel The Shrinking Man (1956) under the title The Incredible Story of Mister C. (1957) he also wrote the screenplay . This film also established his career in Hollywood and is considered a classic of the fantastic film.

As a result - with his growing success in the film industry - he put his literary work more and more in the background in the science fiction scene. He wrote screenplays for which he received numerous awards.

Matheson is an integral part of science fiction of the fifties. Although he came to the genre from the direction of horror , he decided to take advantage of the emerging science fiction boom and knew how to join emerging trends and also use them commercially for himself.

He proved his enduring connection to the fantastic genre through numerous screenplay works, especially with his Edgar Allan Poe adaptations for Roger Corman .

His novel The End is just the beginning, Behind the Horizon is the result of intensive research into the ideas of different religions and cultures about the afterlife. Among other things, he refers to the theosophist Emanuel Swedenborg . The novel was made into a film in 1998 with Robin Williams . The film Behind the Horizon offers expressive images, but has little of the depth of the novel.

For his novel Bid Time Return (1975) received the World Fantasy Award . He received another one in 1984 for his life's work. Matheson's novel Ich bin Legende won the 2012 Bram Stoker Award with the special Vampire Novel of the Century Award . In 2010 he was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame.

Matheson died at the age of 87 in June 2013 at his home in Calabasas, California .
