George Miller (born March 3, 1945 in Chinchilla , Queensland , Australia ) is an Australian film director , screenwriter and film producer .

Live and act

Miller became famous with his Mad Max film series (1979–1985). The three dark end-time action films are now considered classics. With Mad Max Miller set new standards. Explosive material battles, hot car chases and breathtaking stunts became socially acceptable. Miller also made the young Mel Gibson , in the leading role as Max Rockatansky , world famous. In 2015, Mad Max: Fury Road, a fourth part of the series was published, which Miller staged again, but in which Tom Hardy took over the eponymous role. Miller received two nominations for the film in the categories of Best Picture and Best Director at the 2016 Academy Awards .

Before working on Mad Max , Miller, a son of Greek immigrants, initially worked in a completely different direction. After studying medicine at the University of New South Wales Medical School , Miller worked for years as a trauma doctor. He then studied dramaturgy and directing at the University of Melbourne . The rise in the film business was closely related to his best friends, producer Byron Kennedy (1949–1983), but above all to Mel Gibson, who made his worldwide breakthrough with Mad Max .

Miller worked on the script for Contact with Carl Sagan for a year , but left the project due to creative differences with the Warner Brothers film studio and was replaced as director by Robert Zemeckis . In 1996, Miller won a Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture - Comedy / Musical for his work on A Piglet Called Babe . His 2006 film Happy Feet won an Oscar in the Best Animated Feature category. Miller had previously been nominated for an Oscar three times. In 2007 he received a Bafta for the same film . The Australian Film Institute also presented Miller with several awards during his career, including the 2006 Global Achievement Award for his work Happy Feet .

In 2016 he was selected as the jury president of the 69th Cannes International Film Festival .

Miller has a daughter from his first marriage to actress Sandy Gore and two sons from his second marriage to film editor Margaret Sixel . Sixel was also responsible for editing some of his films, including Mad Max: Fury Road .

George Miller should not be confused with George Trumbull Miller , who is also an Australian film director and producer and often just calls himself George Miller.
