Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (Original Title: Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome ) is an Australian action film directed by George Miller . The film was released in German cinemas on September 26, 1985 and on video on March 14, 1986. From September 26 to December 31, 1985 there were around 1.1 million moviegoers in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Conceived as the third part of the Mad Max series, the film is set 20 years after Mad Max and 15 years after the events of Mad Max II - The Executor . There are hardly any motorized vehicles left; Gasoline and water have become more scarce than ever; the land is deserted. Max Rockatansky, the former policeman, falls into the hands of Aunty Entity and their gang in the one they ruled while pursuing a thief, the son of the gyroplane pilot from Part II, who stole all his belongings from his camel-pulled cart City of Bartertown.

action

Bartertown is a settlement that is grouped around an oasis and is reminiscent of a bazaar . This treats with everything ( Engl. Barter = "barter, barter, barter"), from slaves on camels through to rare (though usually radioactively contaminated) water. Max clashes with some of Aunty Entity's henchmen and is brought to her. Entity recognizes Max as the right man to help her with a problem she has with Master. Master of the energy of the settlement by pig waste-derived methane is responsible for working with the giant Blaster together as a unit: Blaster ( Engl. : Sprenger, explosives expert ) impressed by physical size and strength; he carries the short, intelligent master ( English : employer, master, master ) on his back. Since Master Bartertown can embargo energy at any time , he has leverage against Aunty Entity, which it no longer wants to accept. So Max Master's protector should take out Blaster and stay alive for it.

Max provokes a dispute with Master and according to city law, a dispute must be resolved in the Donnerkuppel, a dome-shaped arena made of metal grids. The fight between the blaster and the man without a name takes place there with hooting shouts . The only rule is: "Two men go in, one man goes out." Max and Blaster fight each other to the point of blood. Eventually Max gains the upper hand. He knocks the helmet off Blaster's head, which he always wears and which covers his entire face. When he wants to strike the final blow, he realizes that his opponent is not a monstrous killer, but just a physical giant with the mind of a child. Max looks him in the face and recognizes Blaster's disability ( Down syndrome ). Max doesn't kill blasters; however, one of Aunty's followers does this. As a breach of contract, Max is supposed to be true to the Bartertown law. Break the contract and you will turn the wheel of fortune. After it stops on the "gulag", he is driven blindfolded on the back of a horse into the desert, without water or food.

After a sandstorm - the horse has been swallowed up by sudden quicksand - Max is rescued by a group of teenagers. These are the descendants of passengers on an airplane that crashed in the desert and found shelter in an oasis many years ago . The children and young people mistake Max for the pilot, Captain Walker, who once left them to get help. When Max clears up the circumstances and explains to the group what is really going on in the world, he is not believed. Despite all the warnings, some of the youth set out to look for Bartertown. Max follows them with another group and water supplies.

He finds her and together they reach Bartertown's underworld and free Master. Max manages to escape on rails with the children and Master on a floated truck that has been converted into a locomotive. But Aunty doesn’t give up and lets go after Max. During the chase, one of Max's helpers gains the upper hand over an enemy vehicle. The pursuers can initially be shaken off by a narrow railway bridge, but then the rails suddenly stop and Max and his people have to dismount. They chase a little boy who has kept watch at the end of the train tracks and then escapes through an underground tunnel to his father. Max recognizes the man who stole his things and now asks him to flee together with his plane.

Everyone gets on and the man tries to take the plane off, but the runway is not suitable for this weight. The first attempt to start is unsuccessful and Aunty's people come closer again. You're trying to block the runway. The boy who previously took over the vehicle comes to their aid. Max decides to drive the hijacked vehicle in the direction of the approaching attackers to clear the way for the plane. Shortly before the collision with the opposing vehicle, he jumps off. The cars collide and the pilot can continue taxiing his plane and take off. Aunty aims at the abandoned Max with rifles, but spares him in the end.

The children later reach their destination: Sydney, completely destroyed. Now the children continue to tell the story of Max as a legend and hope that everything will turn out well again at some point.

background

The film is dedicated to Byron Kennedy . He was the producer of the first two films in the series and was killed in a helicopter crash in 1983 while looking for locations for Mad Max - Beyond the Thunder Dome .

Reviews

"Technically perfect end-time spectacle that shows less violence in itself than the first two parts and builds up a dimension of hope in the story of the child tribe."

“In the last part of the 'Mad Max' trilogy, director George Miller didn't exactly rely on logic, but that didn't detract from the box office success. Tina Turner's song ' We Don't Need Another Hero ' was also a real hit . [...] Conclusion: a furious end to the successful hero saga. "
