The Dêqên Autonomous District (Chinese: Diqing , Tibetan བདེ་ ཆེན་ བོད་ རིགས་ རང་སྐྱོང་ ཁུལ །, Chinese  迪庆 藏族 自治州 ) is located in the northwest of the Chinese province of Yunnan and is part of the Tibetan cultural region of Kham. Dêqên has an area of ​​23,870 km² and around 410,000 inhabitants (end of 2016).

Administrative structure

The autonomous district is made up of a district-free city, a district and an autonomous district. These are:

  • City of Shangri-La (香格里拉 市), 11,613 km², 130,000 inhabitants, seat of government: Jiantang Municipality (建 塘镇), center, seat of the district government, emerged from the former Zhongdian County (Tib. Gyalthang);
  • Dêqên district (德钦 县), 7,596 km², 60,000 inhabitants, capital: Shengping municipality (升平 镇);
  • Autonomous district Weixi der Lisu (维西 傈 僳 族 自治县), 4,661 km², 140,000 inhabitants, main town: Baohe (保 和 镇).
