The Garzê Autonomous District (also Kardze , Tibetan དཀར་ མཛེས Wylie dkar mdzes ) of the Tibetans ( Chinese 甘孜 藏族 自治州 , Pinyin Gānzī Zàngzú Zìzhìzhōu ) is located in the northwest of the Chinese province of Sichuan and is part of the Tibetan cultural region of Kham . "Kandse" is the Tibetan name in local pronunciation, according to the official phonetic transcription of the PR China for the Tibetan language as "Garzê". Its administrative seat is the Lucheng municipality in the city of Kangding . It used to be known as an important trading center under the names of Kangding, Dartsedo, Darzêdo and Dajianlu (Tatsienlu). Garzê has an area of 151,078 km².
