history

In 1965 the special area Panzhihua ( 攀枝花 特区 , Pānzhīhuā tèqū ) was converted into the city of Dukou ( 渡口 市 ), which was directly under the provincial government. In 1978 Miyi and Yanbian Counties, which had previously been part of Xichang County, were placed under Dukou. In 1987 the city of Dukou was renamed Panzhihua. In the years 1965, 1974 and 1978, individual parishes were separated from Lijiang and Chuxiong in Yunnan several times and placed under today's Panzhihua. The parts of Panzhihua that once belonged to Yunnan are now in Renhe District. When the Republic of China founded Xikang Province on January 1, 1939 , today's Miyi and Yanbian counties became part of that province. In October 1955, Xikang was dissolved by the government of the People's Republic and integrated into Sichuan.
