Mianyang ( Chinese  綿陽 市  /  绵阳 市 , Pinyin Miányáng shì , W.-G. Mien-yang ) is a district-free city in the north of the Chinese province of Sichuan . Mianyang has an area of ​​20,248.4 square kilometers and had a population of 5,451,833 at the end of 2016.

Mianyang is located in the northwest of the Sichuan Basin and on the central reaches of the Fu Jiang River . Its territory has an east-west extension of 144 kilometers and a north-south extension of about 296 kilometers. The distance to the provincial capital Chengdu is 98 kilometers to the south. Chongqing is 300 kilometers southeast and Xi'an 680 kilometers northeast. The 20,248.4 square kilometers extensive surface of Mianyang is 61% mountainous, another 20% is occupied by hill country and only 19% of the area is flat. The Mianyang relief slopes from northwest to southeast. In the northwest are the mountains that border the Sichuan Basin. These include the Longmen Shan mountains with heights of 1000 to 3000 meters above sea level, Min Shan and the Motianling Shan mountain range to the north with heights of over 3000 meters. This is where Mianyang's highest point lies with the 5440 meter high Xuebaoding Mountain . In the south-east of the district there is hill country with elevations between 400 and 600 meters; the lowest place in Mianyang is at 307.2 meters above sea level.

The most important of the 3000 or so bodies of water that pass through Mianyang are Fu Jiang , Bailong Jiang , Xi He , Huya He , Duopu He , Pingtong He , Tongkou He , Furong He , Anchang He , Kai Jiang , Zi Jiang , Weicheng He , Mi Jiang and Qing Jiang . The Fu Jiang is the largest of the 52 large and medium-sized rivers in Mianyang, it flows through the district for a length of 697 kilometers. Due to its geographical location, Mianyang receives annual rainfall of 16.3 billion cubic meters, of which around 12 billion cubic meters are usable.

The annual average temperature in Mianyang is 16.2 ° C, with winter being the coolest at around 6 ° C and summer being the warmest season with an average of 24.9 ° C. The year 2016 was significantly warmer in Mianyang than in previous years. Mianyang receives an annual average of 940 millimeters of precipitation, almost half of which falls in summer. Mianyang's nature is home to 18 of the most strictly protected animal species in China - including the giant panda - and 60 animal species that are protected by the government on a second-tier basis.

Mianyang had a total population of 5,451,833 people in 2,096,642 households in 2016. Of these, 2,799,288 were men and 2,652,545 women. The population consisted of 3,665,175 people with the status of farmers, 1,786,658 people without the status of farmers, 656,832 temporarily immigrants and 53,270 newborns. The population census for 2000 showed a total population of 5,170,141 people in 1,578,380 households, of which 2,680,950 men and 2,489,191 women. Mianyang has almost 1.8 million hectares of arable land, of which 441,420 hectares are used as arable land, 52,262 hectares as gardens and 1.14 million hectares for forestry. The most important crops are cereals (2.2 million tons on 420,000 hectares), vegetables (2.7 million tons on 75,000 hectares), oil seeds (363,800 tons on 141,000 hectares), cotton (235 tons on 299 hectares), sugar (11,229 tons on 264 hectares), tobacco (19 tons on 11 hectares), medicinal plants for traditional Chinese medicine (30,000 tons on 8400 hectares) and melons (17,000 tons on 5287 hectares). Almost 220,000 tons of fertilizer were used for this.

Mianyang has deposits of iron ore, manganese , lead , zinc , tungsten , gold , silver , sulfur , diamonds , phosphorus , bentonite , calcite , limestone , dolomite , quartz and other mineral resources, 32 species of which were exploited in over 400 mines or pits become.

The annual income of the urban population of Mianyang was 34,411 yuan per capita in 2018  , and that of the rural population was 16,101 yuan per capita.
