Zigong ( Chinese  自貢 市  /  自贡 市 , Pinyin Zìgòng Shì ) is a district-free city in the southwest Chinese province of Sichuan , which was founded in the 7th century . In 1958 the city was connected to the railway network and soon developed into a center for the chemical industry due to the rich salt and gas deposits . For example, machines and fertilizers are manufactured here. The city is home to a dinosaur museum, which exhibits numerous fossil fossils of prehistoric creatures found in the area.

The Xiqin Assembly Hall (西秦 会馆, Xiqin huiguan) is on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China .

Zigong has a population of around 2,770,200 (2016). 666,204 people live in the actual urban settlement area (2010 census).

Administrative structure

At the county level, Zigong is made up of four city ​​districts and two counties. These are (population figures from the end of 2004):

  • Ziliujing district (自流井 区), 154 km², 330,000 inhabitants, center, seat of the city government;
  • Da'an District (大安 区), 401 km², 440,000 inhabitants;
  • District Gongjing (贡井区), 408 square kilometers, 300,000 inhabitants;
  • Yantan District (沿 滩区), 468 km², 390,000 inhabitants;
  • Rong County (荣县), 1,609 km², 690,000 inhabitants, capital: Xuyang Municipality (旭阳 镇);
  • Fushun County (富顺 县), 1,333 km², 1.0 million inhabitants, capital: Fushi Municipality (富 世 镇).
