A blind rivet pliers is a special tool for fastening blind rivets . In Switzerland this tool is called pop rivet pliers .

function

The pliers first pick up the mandrel of the rivet. When actuated, the mandrel is gripped and pulled into the pliers, while the rivet itself is at the head of the pliers. The mandrel holder of the pliers can be exchanged for rivets with different mandrel diameters.

When the mandrel is pulled, it first throws up the rivet material on the opposite side along its entire head circumference until it touches the workpiece. If you continue to pull, the mandrel breaks at its predetermined breaking point within the rivet. The mandrel head remains in the rivet and stabilizes it. The broken outer part of the mandrel is removed as waste using the rivet and pliers.

design type

There are different types of blind rivet pliers, which differ mainly in their handling:

  • Standard riveting pliers with a single lever handle
  • Scissor rivet pliers
  • battery operated rivet pliers
  • Pneumatic rivet gun

Dimensions

The mandrel holder of the pliers must be selected to match the rivet. If the receptacle is too big for the mandrel, the pliers cannot grip the mandrel. If the receptacle is too small, the mandrel will not fit into the pliers.

A number of ISO standards standardize some dimensions for some types of blind rivets. Depending on the design and materials of the rivet, a different standard must be used. For example, the EN ISO 15977: 2002 standard regulates the open blind rivets with steel mandrels and aluminum shaft that are easily available in DIY stores in Germany:

ISO 15977: 2002 (AlA / St)
Shaft diameter / mm 2.40 3, 00 3.20 4th, 00 4.80 5, 00 6th, 00 6.40
Max. Mandrel diameter / mm 1.55 2, 00 2, 00 2.45 2.95 2.95 3.40 3.90

Deviating from these values, ISO 15979: 2002 specifies (mostly) larger maximum mandrel diameters for rivets with steel shank:

ISO 15979: 2002 (St / St)
Shaft diameter / mm 2.40 3, 00 3.20 4th, 00 4.80 5, 00 6th, 00 6.40
Max. Mandrel diameter / mm 1.50 2.15 2.15 2.80 3.50 3.50 3.40 4th, 00

ISO 15983: 2002, in turn, applies to rivets with a stainless steel shaft, with mostly slightly smaller maximum mandrel diameters than with conventional steel:

ISO 15979: 2002 (St / St)
Shaft diameter / mm 0.00 3, 00 3.20 4th, 00 4.80 5, 00
Max. Mandrel diameter / mm 0.00 2.05 2.15 2.75 3.20 3.25
