Leshan ( Chinese  樂山 市  /  乐山 市 , Pinyin Lèshān Shì  - "Freudenberg") is a Chinese city ​​in the province of Sichuan on the southwestern edge of the Red Basin, about 130 km south of Chengdu . The administrative area of ​​the district-free city has an area of ​​12,826 km² and almost 3.26 million inhabitants (end of 2015). 678,752 people live in the actual urban settlement area of ​​Leshan (2010 census).

Administrative structure

At the district level, Leshan is made up of four urban districts, four districts, two autonomous districts and one urban district. These are:

  • Shizhong district (市 中 区 = "city center"), 825 km², 560,000 inhabitants, center, seat of the city government;
  • Shawan District (沙湾 区), 617 km², 200,000 inhabitants;
  • Wutongqiao District (五 通 桥 区), 474 km², 320,000 inhabitants;

  • Qianwei County (犍为县), 1,375 km², 570,000 inhabitants, capital: Yujin Municipality (玉 津 镇);
  • Circle Jingyan (井研县), 841 square kilometers, 410,000 inhabitants, capital: greater community Yancheng (研城镇);
  • Circle Jiajiang (夹江县), 749 square kilometers, 350,000 inhabitants, capital: greater community Yancheng (漹城镇);
  • Muchuan district (沐川县), 1,401 km², 260,000 inhabitants, capital: Muxi municipality (沐 溪镇);
  • Autonomous County Ebian of Yi (峨边彝族自治县) 2,395 km², 140,000 inhabitants, capital: greater community Shaping (沙坪镇);
  • Mabian der Yi Autonomous County (马 边 彝族 自治县), 2,383 km², 180,000 inhabitants, main town: Minjian municipality (民建 镇);

At the confluence of the three rivers Min Jiang , Dadu and Qingyi is Leshan's greatest attraction, the Great Buddha , which was carved out of the rock by Buddhist monks between 719 and 803 . The seated Buddha statue measures 71 m high, the shoulders are 28 m wide, which makes the Leshan Buddha the world's largest stone Buddha. The head alone is 15 meters high and 10 meters wide; the ears are 7 meters long and the big toe can accommodate a soccer team . The statue was erected to tame the vortex of the Dadu, which flows into the Min here.

The statue is on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China , along with the Mahao rock tomb (麻 浩 崖墓, máhào yámù) and the former residence of Guo Moruo in Leshan (乐山 郭沫若 故居, lèshān guō mòruò gùjū) .

Leshan is the production site of the Sichuan Yongxiang Company Limited , a chemical company that u. a. produces the chemical trichlorosilane necessary for silicon production.
