Hervey Bay

Hervey Bay is a city in the Australian state of Queensland and is located about 300 km north of Brisbane on the coast.

history

Before the arrival of the Europeans, the Butchulla Aboriginal tribe settled in the Hervey Bay area. In 1770, James Cook reached the area and named the bay Hervey's Bay after the British military Augustus Hervey . Matthew Flinders mapped a large area of the coast during his visit in 1802. In 1863, the first European settled in what would later become the town of Hervey Bay. Hervey Bay was connected to the railroad in 1913. In the 1920s the population rose sharply as agriculture (sugar, citrus fruits) and cattle farming expanded rapidly. Regular air connections to Brisbane began in 1930. Also in the 1930s, the road connection to Maryborough, about 30 km away, was paved.

After the Second World War, the southern Australians discovered the uniformly warm climate in the latitudes for themselves and so Hervey Bay developed into a popular tourist center over the years.

traffic

Air connections to Brisbane and Sydney are available from the city's airport .

The nearest train station is 10 km west of Maryborough and offers long-distance connections to Brisbane and Cairns . Free buses connect it to Hervey Bay.

Brisbane is approximately 3:30 hours drive from the Bruce Highway .

economy

The branches of construction, rental of apartments, industry and retail are of particular importance in Hervey Bay, with 21.1% providing the most jobs (as of 2006). The unemployment rate was just under 8% in September 2008, around 2 percentage points higher than in Maryborough.
