It was founded in the 1840s and was a successful city early on. It profited from the wool trade and participated in the gold rush of the late 19th century. For a long time Maryborough was also an immigration port for immigrants to Queensland.
Today Maryborough has about 22,000 inhabitants and together with the nearby Hervey Bay forms the Fraser Coast tourist area . Because of its long tradition, the city advertises with the title "Heritage City" and has also geared itself towards tourism.
