Beichuan
The Beichuan Autonomous County of the Qiang ( Chinese 北 川 羌族 自治县 , Pinyin Běichuān Qiāngzú zìzhìxiàn ) is an autonomous district of the Qiang in the Chinese province of Sichuan . It belongs to the administrative area of the prefecture-level Mianyang City . It has an area of 2867.83 square kilometers and has a population of 160,000 (2004). The seat of government is the large community of Qushan ( Chinese 曲 山镇 , Pinyin Qushan zhen ).
The Qiang people in Sichuan live mainly in the counties of Mao , Wenchuan , Li , Heishui and Sungqu (Songpan), which all belong to the Ngawa Autonomous District of the Tibetans and Qiang .
Beichuan is located on the Tongkou He ( 通 口 河 ), a tributary of the Fu Jiang ( 涪江 ). The Jianjiang River ( 湔 江 , Jian Jiang ) and the Baicao He ( 白草 河 ), Qingpian He ( 青 片 河 ), Duba He ( 都 坝河 ), Subao He ( 苏 宝 河 ) and Pingtong He ( 平 通河 ) rivers flow through its territory. Four large valleys are Xiaozhaizigou ( 小寨 子沟 ), Taibaigou ( 太白 沟 ), Houyuangou ( 后 园 沟 ) and Bainigou ( 白 坭 沟 ).
The Sichuan earthquake on May 12, 2008 triggered a landslide above Beichuan that blocked a river so that a lake formed. Thousands of residents were evacuated for fear of a dam break.
