The Cihai ( Chinese  辭海  /  辞海  - "Sea of ​​Words") is a modern, comprehensive lexicon and dictionary for individual characters and polysyllabic terms in the Chinese language .

It was first compiled by Shu Xincheng ( 舒 新城 ) in 1936 and published by Zhonghua Shuju in Shanghai . In a quasi-encyclopedic manner, it deals with various areas of knowledge: natural sciences, philosophy, history and many others.

The Cihai is the most popular and normatively authoritative lexicon in China for many areas of knowledge and one of the most important modern aids in Western Sinology .

The work has been revised several times. Its latest edition was published by Shanghai Cishu Chubanshe ( 上海 辞书 出版社 ) and for the first time arranges the word stock in alphabetical order according to the pinyin romanization.

The Da Cihai ( 大 辞海  - "The Great Sea of ​​Words") is the enlarged edition of the Cihai, which was published in 2002 and last updated at the end of 2008,

The Cihai contains vocabulary from different areas, such as B. Philosophy, History, Medicine, Law, Chemistry, Religion, Mathematics and other areas, and thus a comprehensive encyclopedic dictionary.

The 2009 edition of Cihai contains approximately 127,000 terms and 22 million words, an expansion of 10% over the 1999 edition. It also contains more than 18,000 color photos.

The late 2008 edition of Da Cihai contains approximately 300,000 terms and 500 million words in 38 volumes. The subject deals primarily with philosophy, medicine, law, linguistics, physical and chemical mechanics, Chinese history, Chinese literature, astronomy, geosciences, environmental sciences, foreign literature and sports.
