Wenchuan
Wenchuan ( Chinese 汶川县 , Pinyin Wènchuān Xiàn , Tibetan ལུང་ དགུ ། Wylie lung dgu , Lunggu ) is a district in the southeast of the Ngawa Autonomous District of the Tibetans and Qiang in the Chinese province of Sichuan . Its main town is the large village Weizhou ( 威州镇 ). It is located on the northwestern edge of the Sichuan Basin on the upper reaches of the Min River (Min Jiang).
The district has an area of 4,084 square kilometers and has 106,119 inhabitants (2005).

On May 12, 2008, the area was the epicenter of a major earthquake .

The Giant Panda Research Center ( 大熊猫 研究 中心 , Daxiongmao yanjiu zhongxin ) and the China Wolong Giant Panda Museum ( 中国 卧龙 大熊猫 博物馆 , Zhongguo Wolong Daxiongmao bowuguan ), which opened in 2002, are located in the greater Wolong community .
The Neolithic sites of Yingpanshan ( Mao (Ngawa) County ) and Jianghabeng (Wenchuan County) ( Yingpanshan he Jianghabeng yizhi ( 营盘 山 和 姜维 城 遗址 )) of the Yingpanshan culture ( 营盘 山 文化 ) have been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic since 2006 China (6-177) .
