The Bai are one of the 56 nationalities recognized by the People's Republic of China . The Bai have 1,936,155 members (2010 census). Their mother tongue - the Bai of the same name - is only spoken by half of the people.

The Bai call themselves Bairt‧zix [pɛ tsz̩], Bairt‧zix‧Bairt‧yvnx [pɛ tsz̩ pɛ jṽ̩] , Bairt‧horx [pɛ xo] , Bairt‧ngvrt‧zix‧horx [pɛ ŋv̩ tsz̩ xo] and Bairt ‧Yin [pɛ ĩ] ; in Chinese they are officially called 白族 , Pinyin : Báizú , formerly also 民家 , Mínjiā etc. Other names or spellings for the Bai are Pai / Petsi , Minkia , Labbu , Nama , Leme etc.

The Bai live mostly in the Autonomous County Dali province Yunnan , in the city of Bijie province Guizhou and in the circle Sangzhi province Hunan .
