Anhui ( Chinese  安徽 , Pinyin Ānhuī ) is a province of the People's Republic of China . Anhui is an inland province in southeast China, on the Yangtze River. Anhui was founded in 1667 with the division of Jiangnan Province into Anhui and Jiangsu . The name " Anhui " is derived from the city names An qing and Hui zhou (today: Huangshan ). Anhui's capital is Hefei .

geography

Anhui is included in the East China ( Huadong ) region . Neighboring provinces are Henan , Hubei , Jiangsu , Jiangxi , Shandong and Zhejiang . The province is traversed by the Yangtze River in the south and by the Huai He in the north . The topography is changeable. The rivers and their tributaries form wide river valleys, while the rest of the country is hilly to mountainous. The highest point is the 1864 m high peak of the Huang Shan massif.

climate

Anhui lies in the border area between temperate and subtropical climates. In addition, the warm and cold air currents from the coast and the inland meet here. The climate is therefore changeable, with floods and droughts occurring again and again, especially in the area of the Huai He river .

The annual precipitation increases from around 700 mm in the north to over 2000 mm on the Huang Shan in the south.

Administrative structure

At the district level, Anhui is made up of 16 district-free cities . These are:

Anhui is one of the cradles of the Chinese nation. Traces of settlement have been found since prehistory. Known since the time of the spring and autumn annals (722 to 481 BC). During the Shang Dynasty , Bozhou was temporarily the capital of Anhui . It was also of economic importance during the Three Kingdoms period .

economy

Due to the predominantly agricultural economy, Anhui was considered the most backward province of Eastern China until 1949 , but has since developed into a center of heavy industry , especially the automotive industry around the manufacturer Chery in Wuhu .

In 2015, Anhui's economy was the 14th largest in China with a GDP of 2.20 trillion yuan ($ 353 billion). The GDP per capita was 39,092 yuan (US $ 5,886 / PPP : US $ 11,256) per year (25th place among Chinese provinces). The level of prosperity in the province was thus roughly on par with Namibia and was 72% of the Chinese average.

Culture

A number of modern writers come from Anhui, including Hu Shi and Chen Duxiu . Chen Guidi and Wu Chuntao received international attention for their report on the situation of Chinese farmers .

tourism

The province's greatest attraction is the 1841 meter high Huang Shan . The Huang Shan has played a major role in Chinese art and literature since the Tang Dynasty . It is so valued by the Chinese that Xie Xiake can say without contradiction: Anyone who has been to Huang Shan no longer looks at any other mountain. In the eyes of the Chinese, the extraordinary beauty of Huang Shan is expressed in the perfect harmony of bold rock formations, ancient gnarled pines and hot springs. A weather event that is widely celebrated is the so-called sea of clouds, in which the mountain peaks, viewed from the summit, rise from an ocean of clouds. The Huang Shan is the tourist center of gravity of the province and is easier to reach from Shanghai and Hangzhou (from the east) or from Wuhan (from the west) than from the provincial capital Hefei . Hefei itself is a rapidly growing industrial city. The Huang Shan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In addition to the tourist magnet Huang Shan, there is also the 1,342 meter high Jiuhua Shan , one of the four sacred mountains of Chinese Buddhism, and the Tianzhushan , which is located in the middle of a nature reserve.
