history

The beginnings of Tongling go back to the beginning of the Han dynasty 1500 years ago. Because of its copper and tin deposits, it soon became an important economic center for the production of bronze . The city's importance for economy and trade grew steadily until the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) dynasties, during the Japanese occupation between 1938 and 1945 and especially under the communist government from 1949.

Economy and industry

The city's wealth and economic importance are based on its significant ore deposits, especially the copper mines and the metalworking industry. The mines in the area mined: iron, coal, gold, silver and tin, plus more than 20 rare minerals such as nickel , cadmium , gallium , molybdenum , germanium and selenium . Other important industries are the chemical and construction industries, electronics, mechanical engineering and the food industry.

Just as important as industry is agricultural production in the neighboring area. Rice, wheat, cotton, beans, garlic, herbs for the pharmaceutical industry and ginger are produced and processed. The fish abundance of the Chang Jang is the basis for fishing and the fish processing industry.

In 1995, a suspension bridge was built over the Yangtze in Tongling , which, with a length of 2.6 km, is the third largest of its kind in the world.

natural reserve

The Yangtze River is one of the last retreats for the river dolphin (Latin: Lipotes vexillifer , Chinese: Baiji), one of the rarest mammals in the world. Two reserves have been set up near Tongling in Lake Tongling and Lake Shishou Oxbow, to which the few dolphins still living in the river have been relocated.
