The Chinese term Jiangnan ( Chinese  江南 , Pinyin Jiāngnán  - "south of the river", meaning the river Yangtze ) refers nowadays to the areas in south-central China or to the area south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze . From the time of the Tang Dynasty onwards, the term was also used to refer to various historical administrative areas from the municipality to the province ( dao道, lu路, sheng省). Today, Jiangnan is used to describe the areas of various provinces, including southern Jiangsu , northern Zhejiang and Anhui , or generally the fertile landscape south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. During the Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty , Jiangnan was an important agricultural and commercial center.
