Monba

The Monba (also Monpa , Moinba or Menba ; Chinese 门巴族 , Pinyin Ménbāzú ) are an indigenous people in the People's Republic of China , India and Bhutan . In the PR China, the Monba are one of the smaller of the 55 officially recognized ethnic minorities . According to the last census in 2010, they counted 10,561 people. They live in the Tibet Autonomous Region . Around 50,000 Monba live in southeastern Tibet, which is administered by India as the state of Arunachal Pradesh but is claimed by China. They settle there in the two westernmost districts of Tawang and West Kameng . Another 3,000 Monba live in Bhutan.

languages

With the Monba of China - depending on the settlement area - two very different languages are spoken, but both of them belong to Sino-Tibetan :

Tshangla Language , also known as Cangluo-Monba (仓洛门巴语) is one of the bodischen languages , a subunit of the Tibeto-Burman , which is a primary branch of the Sino Tibetan. Tshangla is also spoken by the Monba of Bhutans.
Cona-Monba (错那门巴语) belongs to the East Kiranti branch of the Mahakiranti languages , which also form a sub-unit of Tibeto-Burmese. Cona-Monba is also spoken by the Monba in the Indian-controlled part of Tibet.

In addition to the traditional autochthonous beliefs, there is also a growing influence of Tibetan Buddhism .
