Vietnamese

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Vietnamese (also Kinh , vietn. Người Việt or người Kinh ) are an ethnic group in Southeast Asia . The Âu Việt from southern China and the Lạc Việt from what is now northern Vietnam , who are particularly associated with the Dong Son culture , are considered to be the tribal peoples . Although the Vietnamese live predominantly in Southeast Asia, as a former province of China (beginning of the Eastern Han Dynasty up to the time of the Five Dynasties and Ten Empires ) they are culturally closer to East Asia and especially to the South Chinese than to the Southeast Asians. According to the 1999 census , 86 percent of Vietnam's population are Kinh Vietnamese. In the People's Republic of China they are called Gin ( Chinese  京 族 , Pinyin Jīngzú  - "Gin people" "). Since the character 京, Pinyin jīng, South Chinese king (cf. German Nan king and Pe king ), is usually capital to see it here as a phonetic rendering of the Vietnamese name Kinh .

distribution

Starting from North Vietnam and South China, the Vietnamese conquered large parts of the former Champa Kingdom and the Khmer Empire in what is now South Vietnam. They are the largest population group in most of the provinces of Vietnam and make up a significant proportion of Cambodia's population . Two million Cambodians were murdered under the Khmer Rouge . Many survivors fled to Vietnam.

Some Vietnamese immigrated to China in the 16th century. They still speak Vietnamese, but are more sinic than the people of Vietnam. They inhabit mainly Autonomous Region Guangxi of Zhuang and its surroundings.

At least since the end of the First World War, there have been Vietnamese living and studying in France. When the French withdrew from Vietnam in 1954, some Vietnamese emigrated to France .

After the end of the Vietnam War there was by the boat people who have fled from communism, again waves of emigration. Many Vietnamese found a new home in North America, Western Europe (especially in the former colonial power France) and Australia . However, some Vietnamese also worked as contract workers in the former Comecon states (especially in the former Soviet Union, Poland, Czechoslovakia and the GDR) and still live there or in the respective successor states.
