The Er Hai ( Chinese  洱海 , Ěr Hǎi ) or " Erhai Lake " is a lake in the southwest Chinese province of Yunnan that was created by an alpine fault .

The Erhai used to be known as Yeyuze or Kunming Lake . A common mistake in translation is “Ohr-See”. However, the Chinese character for "ear" is "耳"; the character "洱" denotes a proper name and occurs in the city name Pu'er .

geography

The Erhai lies at an altitude of 1,972 m above sea level. In the north-south extension, the lake has a length of 40 km and the east-west width is about 7–8 km. Its area is 250 km², making the Erhai the second largest highland lake in China, after Lake Dian near Kunming . Its circumference is 116 km, its average depth is 11 m and the total storage capacity is 2.5 billion m³.

The lake is nestled between the Cangshan Mountains in the west and the city of Dali . It begins at Dengchuan at its northern end and ends at Xiaguan - the new town of Dali - in the south. The Erhai receives water in the north from the Miju and Mici rivers, in the east from the Bolou, and from smaller streams from the Cangshan Mountains. The Yangbi River is the outlet of the lake in the south and it eventually flows into the Lancang Jiang ( Mekong ).

Attractions

The lakeside can be explored by hiking. The Erhai Park and the butterfly spring on the west bank are worth seeing. Islands on the lake - including Ge Guanyin, Jinsuo, Nanzhao Fengqing, and Xiaoputuo - can also be visited.

A cycle path has been set up along the rarely used shore road around the lake (the 环海 路), on which the lake can be circled from Dali.

The lake is an important source of food for the local population, the Bai , who are famous for their cormorant fishing : their trained cormorants catch the fish and return with them to the fishermen. Rings around the neck of the cormorants prevent them from swallowing the fish. In the Erhai there is also a large variety of carp ( Cyprinus ), although endemic species ( C. barbatus , C. daliensis and the spring fish C. longipectoralis ) have also been found.

Not far from the south west bank is the Chongsheng Temple, famous for its three pagodas .
