Barkam ( Barkham ) is an independent city in the Ngawa Autonomous Region of the Tibetans and Qiang in the north of the Chinese province of Sichuan .

geography

Barkam is located on the southern edge of the highlands of Tibet and the northwestern edge of the Sichuan basin at a distance of 365 kilometers from the provincial capital Chengdu . In the south, Barkam borders the Wolong Nature Reserve and the Siguniang Mountains . Barkam administers a territory of 6633 square kilometers.

The territory of Barkam lies at altitudes between 2180 and 5301 meters above sea level. It slopes slightly from northeast to southwest. The annual average temperatures are between 8 and 9 ° C with 120 frost-free days per year. Barkam receives an average rainfall of 753 millimeters and 2000 hours of sunshine per year. Barkam is traversed by 3 large and 69 small rivers, most of which have a high flow speed and together have a theoretical potential of 7.2 gigawatts of power.

Approximately 168,000 hectares of the Barkam area are covered with forest, whereby the forests mainly contain firs , spruces and larches . They provide habitat for rare animals such as leopards , white-lipped deer , sika deer and takins .

At the end of 2016, Barkam had a registered population of 55,388, of which 28,431 were men and 26,975 were women. The resident population was 59,600 at the end of 2016. The population census of the year 2000 showed a total population of 55,046 people in 14,990 households, of which 28,308 men and 26,738 women.

The 55,388 registered residents of Barkam were composed of 42,877 Tibetans , 10,019  Han , 1644  Qiang and 662  Hui at the end of 2016  . 30,940 people were registered as rural and 24,448 as non-rural. The urban population was given as 49% of the total population, the birth rate with 9.74 births per thousand inhabitants, the death rate with 4.25 per thousand.

Culture

The village of Zhuokeji Tusiguan (Zhuokeji tusiguan zhai 卓克基 土司 官寨) from the Qing Dynasty and the Diaolou in Zhibo (Zhibo diaolou 直 波 碉楼), d. H. the village of Zhibo (直 波 村) in the large community of Songgang (松岗 镇), have been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China since 1988 and 2001 respectively .

Barkam has deposits of lithium , silicon , tantalum , nickel , gold , aluminum , zinc , lead and titanium . The reserves of lithium are estimated at 2.3 million tons and those of silicon at more than 2.5 million tons. In addition, marble , granite and quartz mined.

Barkam has 3,200 acres of arable land and nearly 300,000 acres of pasture land. Maize, wheat, Tibetan barley , potatoes , apples, Szechuan pepper , walnuts and pears are grown and yaks , goats and sheep are raised.
