Heinz Koch as a German teacher Klamm

In addition to performances in theaters, the play, for which the equipment of a typical classroom is sufficient, is performed in schools and universities. The performer speaks directly to individual viewers and includes them as the passive role of the students in the performance. The play deals with the tension between teachers and students, violence in schools and the difference between illusion and reality of a teacher.

action

A student committed suicide because of a bad grade he received from his teacher Klamm that cost him his high school diploma. The advanced course in German then symbolically declares war on his teacher Klamm. He responds to this declaration of war and shows the full range of typical teacher clichés, from sensitive friends to strict rulers, and finally to alcoholics, whose life is broken by this one event and the frustrating everyday school life for him.

When all efforts to communicate with his students fail, teacher Klamm thinks of suicide for his part. But whether he will commit it remains open. The piece ends when Klamm leaves the hall with a pistol in hand and the door slams loudly.

The plot of the play extends over several weeks. The individual acts, which are heralded in the school performances by writing on the board, are thematically based on Goethe's Faust. Based on a tragedy .

Awards

In 2002 the play was awarded the German Youth Theater Prize.
