Kai Hensel (* 1965 in Hamburg ) is a German author.

Life

After graduating from high school , Hensel worked as an advertising copywriter in Hamburg and Frankfurt am Main . He later worked in various jobs, including as a bartender, dishwasher and museum attendant. In the mid-1990s, Hensel undertook extensive trips through Europe, Africa and Asia. After his return to Germany, Hensel worked for two seasons as a director at the Lübeck Theater .

From 1994 Hensel worked as a screenwriter for numerous television films and series, a. a. "RTL Saturday Night", "Alarm for Cobra 11", "The men from K3". Hensel has lived as a freelance writer in Berlin since 2000. His first stage drama is the one-person play " Klamm's War ". After its world premiere in 2000 at the Staatsschauspiel Dresden, it developed into the most frequently performed play in the German-speaking world with over a hundred productions. Hensel's drama “Which drug suits me?” Has been staged over fifty times. Hensel's pieces are played in European and non-European countries.

His first two novels about the investigator and bartender Maria Brecht - "The Perseus Protocol" and "Sundew" - received enthusiastic reviews. “The Perseus Protocol” was produced by WDR 5 as a two-part radio play. “Sundew” was on the shortlist for the 2015 Glauser Prize in the “best novel” category.

Hensel also writes reports on his travels for various newspapers and magazines (including “Tagesspiegel”, “tip”, “Frankfurter Rundschau”).

As a lecturer for creative writing, he teaches at the HFF Munich, the Goethe Institute and the University of Augsburg.
