The Enshi Autonomous District of the Tujia and Miao ( Chinese  恩施 土家族 苗族 自治州 , Pinyin Ēnshī Tŭjiāzú Miáozú zìzhìzhōu ) is located in the southwest of the Chinese province of Hubei . Enshi extends from 108 ° 23′12 ′ ′ to 110 ° 38′08 ′ ′ east longitude and from 29 ° 07′10 ′ ′ to 31 ° 24′13 ′ ′ north latitude. Its administrative area is bordered to the west and north by the municipalities Qianjiang and Wanzhou the city of Chongqing , the south by the Autonomous District Xiangxi province of Hunan and in the northeast and east of Shennongjia and Yichang in Hubei. Enshi has an area of ​​24,111 km² and approx. 3.83 million inhabitants (end of 2004). The whole of Enshi is a mountain area that runs from southwest to northeast from the Wu Mountains ( Chinese  巫山 , Pinyin Wū Shān ), the Qiyue Mountains ( Chinese  齐 岳 山脉 , Pinyin Qíyuè Shānmài ), the Wuling Mountains ( Chinese  武陵山脉 , Pinyin Wŭlíng Shānmài ) and the Dalou Mountains ( Chinese  大 娄 山脉 , Pinyin Dàlóu Shānmài ). Heights below 1000  m are only found in isolated cases.

Administrative structure

At the district level, the autonomous district consists of two independent cities and six districts. These are:

  • City of Enshi (恩施 市), 3972 km², approx. 770,000 inhabitants, capital of the autonomous region;
  • City of Lichuan (利川 市), 4603 km², approx. 840,000 inhabitants;
  • Circle Jianshi (建始县), km² in 2666, about 510,000 inhabitants, capital: greater community Yezhou (业州镇);
  • Badong district (巴东 县), 3354 km², approx. 480,000 inhabitants, main town: Xinling municipality (信 陵镇);
  • Circle Xuan'en (宣恩县) square kilometers in 2730, 340,000 inhabitants, capital: large village Zhushan (珠山镇);
  • Xianfeng County (咸丰县), 2550 km², 360,000 inhabitants, capital: Gaoleshan Municipality (高 乐山 镇);
  • Laifeng District (来凤县), 1344 km², 310,000 inhabitants, main town: Xiangfeng Municipality (翔凤 镇);
  • District of Hefeng (鹤峰 县), 2892 km², 220,000 inhabitants, main town: Rongmei municipality (容 ​​美 镇).
