The Mongolian Autonomous District of Bortala is located in the northwest of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in the People's Republic of China. Its capital is Bortala (Bole). Bortala has an area of ​​24,895.68 km² and about 450,000 inhabitants (end of 2004).

Administrative structure

At the district level, Bortala is made up of two cities and two districts. These are:

  • City of Bortala (博乐 市 Bólè Shì), 6,597.68 km², 250,000 inhabitants, district capital;
  • City of Alashankou (阿拉山口 市 Ālāshānkǒu Shì), 1,204 km², 40,000 inhabitants;
  • Jinghe district (精河县 Jīnghé Xiàn), 11,189.15 km², 130,000 inhabitants, main town: Jinghe municipality (精 河镇);
  • Arixang district (温泉 县 Wēnquán Xiàn), 5,904.85 km², 70,000 inhabitants, main town: Bogdar municipality (博格达尔 镇).
