Shihezi is a district-free city in the north of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China and is directly subordinate to the regional government . The administrative area of ​​the city has an area of ​​7529 km²; 460 km² of this belong to the actual urban area and about 30 km² are built-up areas. Shihezi had 572,772 residents in 2005, only 5.4% of whom were ethnic minorities. The majority of the population are Han Chinese .

The city lies on the southern edge of the Djungarian basin on the northern flank of the Borochoro mountain range. The Manasi He River flows through the urban area in a northerly direction.

Oil, textile and food industries are the main industries in Shihezi. Nearby are sugar beet and cotton grown.

The Shihezi University is the second largest university in Xinjiang.
