Aral ( Uighur ئارال شەھرى Aral Xəⱨri ; Chinese  阿拉尔 市 , Pinyin Ālā'ěr Shì ) is a suburb independent city in the Uyghur Autonomous Region Xinjiang of the People's Republic of China .

Administrative structure

At the community level, Aral is made up of four street districts , a community , eight production and construction corps, two administrative offices, a state farm and a state prison. These are:

history

Aral was originally a village and a Chinese military garrison. In 1957, the Xinjiang Production and Development Corps settled in Aral, cleared over 1.2 million mu (800 km²) of land and set up ten cattle breeding stations.

On September 17, 2002, Aral received the status of an independent city after a decision by the State Council.

geography

Aral is located on the southern slopes of the Tianshan Mountains, north of the Taklimakan desert , on the upper reaches of the Tarim River , where the rivers Aksu , Hotan and Yarkant meet.

The total area of ​​the administrative area is 4,196 km², its extension from east to west about 130 km, from north to south 60 km.

population

In 2002 Aral had around 260,000 inhabitants, mainly Han Chinese ; 5.3% of the population are members of national minorities .

economy

In Aral there are three reservoirs (Duōlàng 多 浪, Shènglì 胜利 and Shàngyóu 上游) with a total area of ​​248.8 km² and a capacity of 518 million m³ as well as rich groundwater reserves . There are wheat , cotton , fruit and vegetables grown. The cotton production is currently 183,000 tons per year and there are more than 8,000 dairy cows. Aral is known for its Chinese dates ( jujubes ) and sweet chestnuts .

Aral is connected to the railway network and can be reached via a national highway (No. 314).

tourism

The military garrisons, reservoirs and scenic beauties such as the Tarim River and the surrounding desert are recommended as tourist attractions.
