The Hotan (also Hotan He , Chinese 和田 河 , Pinyin Hétián Hé - "River Hotan", Uighur خوتەن دەرياسى) is a river in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in northwest China .
The Hotan arises in the Taklamakan desert at the confluence of its two source rivers Karakax and Yurungkax , about 150 km north of the city of Hotan . It flows in a northerly direction through the Tarim Basin . Its water is used for irrigation . The river only reaches the Tarim after about 300 km when the water flow is strong, during the snowmelt in the summer months of July and August . In dry years it happens that the Hotan does not reach the Tarim at all, but rather drains away beforehand. The Hotan drains an area of 43,600 km², which extends in the south over the western Kunlun Mountains.
