Course of the Karakax in the catchment area of the Tarim |
The Karakax (also Karakasch ; Chinese 黑 玉河 , Pinyin Hēiyù hé - "River Heiyu", Uighur قاراقاش دەرياسى) is the left source river of the Hotan in Aksai Chin and in the south of the Xinjiang autonomous region in the southwest of the People's Republic of China .
The Karakax rises in Aksai Chin on the northern slope of the western Himalayas . It flows through Aksai Chin in a northerly direction and then turns to the west. At the settlement of Xaidulla the Karakax changes course to the north and cuts through the western Kunlun Mountains. He turns to the east. It continues its course in an east-northeast direction through the Kunlun Mountains. Shortly before reaching the Tarim basin , the river is dammed by the Wuluwati dam . It now flows through the Taklamakan desert west of the city of Hotan . It passes the city of the same name , which is also the administrative center of the district of the same name . About 130 km further north the Karakax joins the Yurungkax to form the Hotan. The entire course of the Karakax and Hotan rivers has a length of 1035 km. The river name means "black jade river".
