Shuanghe or Qoshögüz ( Chinese  雙河 市  /  双河 市 , Pinyin Shuānghé Shì , Uighur قوشئۆگۈز شەھىرى, Yengi Ⱪoxɵgüz Xəⱨiri ) is a district- free city in the extreme northwest of the Uyghur Autonomous Region of Xinjiang in the People's Republic of China, which is directly subordinate to the regional government (and not like other independent cities at the district level) . It is located 30 km east of Bortala and 50 km southwest of Alashankou and the border with Kazakhstan . The city was only officially founded in 2014 and covers an area of 742.18 km² and has 53,800 inhabitants.

Surname

The name Shuanghe means "two rivers" and refers to the Bortala and the Jing rivers (精河). As early as the time of the Tang Dynasty , there was an administrative unit Shuanghe Dudufu (双河,), which was established in the area around 658 AD.

history

The city was built on the settlement area of the 5th Division of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (XPCC). In January 2014, the State Council of the People's Republic of China decided on the administrative establishment of the city and on February 26, 2014, the official establishment was held. Shuanghe is the seventh city in Xinjiang that emerged from a settlement of the XPCC, after Shihezi , Aral , Tumxuk , Wujiaqu , Beitun and Tiemenguan .
