The Tate striped sac marten ( Myoictis wavicus ) is a species of the genus striped sac marten in the order of the predator-like . This carnivore lives in New Guinea .

Myoictis wavicus was previously regarded as a subspecies of the Muller striped marten ( Myoictis melas ). Due to morphological and genetic studies, it was recently raised to full species status. It is most closely related to the Woolley striped pouch marten ( Myoictis leucura ).

The Tate striped bag marten has a head-to-trunk length of 16.5 to 17 cm (males) or 14 to 17 cm (females) and weighs 110 to 134 g (males) or 61 to 83 g ( Female). The Tate striped bag marten differs from the other striped bag marten in its short-haired tail. The general coat color is gray-brown with lighter hair between the black dorsal stripes. Thenar and first interdigital pad are fused together. The posterior palatal windows are large. The premolar P 3 has a single root. The females carry four teats in a bag.

distribution

The Tate striped pouch marten is endemic to Papua New Guinea . It is only known from fewer than 10 specimens collected in Morobe in the Wau area , on the northern side of the Owen Stanley Mountains . There it occurs at altitudes of 975 to 1810 meters.

Habitat and way of life

This species inhabits primary mountain forests. Like its relatives, it becomes diurnal and is considered to be largely ground-living.
