The Owen Stanley Mountains are the southeastern part of the Bismarck Mountains in Papua New Guinea , near the capital Port Moresby on the island of New Guinea . The highest point is Mount Victoria at 4038 meters.

The mountains are named after Owen Stanley , who discovered the mountains in 1849 during an expedition from 1846 to 1850.

The Kokoda Track has long been the only relatively easy transition over the mountains.

fauna

The broadheaded tree rat is endemic to the rainforests of the Owen Stanley Mountains, where it lives on trees. The Owen Stanley Mountains represent the southwestern limit of distribution for the Blue-necked Bird of Paradise .
