The Mueller striped marten ( Myoictis melas ) is a species from the genus of the striped marten in the family of the predator (Dasyuridae) that lives in northern New Guinea and on the islands of Batanta , Salawati , Waigeo and Yapen . The animals live there at heights of up to 1,800 meters above sea level.

Appearance

The Müller striped marten has a head-trunk length of 19 to 24 cm (males) or 17 to 21.5 cm (females) and weighs 172 to 255 g. It is about the same size as the Woolley striped bag marten ( Myoictis leucura ) and the Wallace striped bag marten ( Myoictis wallacii ) but larger than the Tate striped bag marten ( Myoictis wavicus ). The color of the animals is variable, some specimens are melanistic . Most of them are brightly colored with reddish or whitish hair between the black stripes on the back. The fur is reddish directly behind the ears and on the neck. The lower third premolar is missing. The females of the Mueller striped marten have six nipples, whereas those of the Woolley striped marten and the Tate striped marten have four.

The Müller striped bag marten can be easily distinguished from other types of striped marten mainly by its tail. It is hairy, has a hair comb on top and tapers towards the tip.

Way of life

The Müller striped marten lives in lowland and mountain rainforests, also in the vicinity of settlements and in old gardens. He also goes into houses to hunt mice. However, no details are known about his diet. The animals are probably active at night and at dawn. They are not common in their area of ​​distribution. The Müller striped bag marten is considered safe.
