At 453 km², Batanta is the smallest of the four main islands of the Raja Ampat archipelago off the coast of Western New Guinea ( Indonesia ).

Batanta lies between the islands of Salawati in the south and Gam and Waigeo in the north. Further to the southeast is the Bird Head Peninsula of New Guinea . The archipelago belongs to the Raja Ampat administrative district of the West Papua Province .

The highest point of Batana is 1184  m .

fauna

The blue tree monitor ( Varanus macraei ) is native to the island . This species is only known from Batanta so far.

Other endemic species on the island are the freshwater rainbow fish Melanotaenia batanta and Melanotaenia synergos , while Melanotaenia catherinae is also known from the neighboring island of Waigeo. The bare-headed bird of paradise and the red bird of paradise are also found on both Batanta and Waigeo.
