Raja Ampat is an Indonesian administrative district ( Kabupaten ) that includes most of the Raja Ampat archipelago . Only the south of Salawati Island is part of Sorong Governorate .

Raja Ampat belongs to the province of West Papua (Papua Barat). The capital is Wasai ( Waisai ) on Waigeo .

The administrative district has a land area of ​​46,108 km², which is spread over 1,800 islands. If you include the sea area, the administrative district is 4.6 million hectares in size. Raja Ampat is divided into 24 districts ( Kecamatan ) and 121 villages (117 Kampung and four Kelurahan ).

Residents

35 of the islands of Raja Ampats are inhabited. In 2010 there were 60,386 inhabitants (33,486 men, 26,918 women). In 2001 there were 47,771. Almost the entire population lives by the sea. Only in the Kampungs Kalobo , Waijan , Tomolol , Wasai and Magey are settled further in the interior of the island.
