Gag is a small island in the Halmahera Sea . It belongs to the Raja Ampat archipelago off the coast of Western New Guinea , the Indonesian part of New Guinea .
geography
Gag is located in the northwest of the archipelago, west of the main island of Waigeo . To the southwest are the Faminseln , to the north the island of Kawe and the Waiag Islands and to the south the small islands of Mios , Mios Ga , Miosging and Yef Doif and a little further on the larger Kofiau . Gag belongs to the district of West Waigeo Islands ( Waigeo Barat Kepulauan ) in the administrative district of Raja Ampat ( West Papua Province ).
Residents and economy
The only settlement on Gag is Gambier Bay with 450 inhabitants. The place was founded in the early 1960s when nickel was mined on the island by BHP Billiton, among others . When a new forest protection law came into force in 1999, nickel mining was stopped.
