Halmahera Lake

The Halmahera Sea (Indonesian: Laut Halmahera ) is a 95,000 square kilometer tributary sea to the Pacific Ocean and belongs to the Australasian Mediterranean . It is located in the Malay Archipelago and is a tropical sea .

The Halmahera Basin reaches a depth of 2039 m.

To the south the sea merges into the Seram Sea , to the west into the Molucca Sea .

To the southwest are the Obi Islands , to the west the islands of Halmahera and Morotai , to the east the Raja Ampat archipelago and the Vogelkop peninsula belonging to New Guinea . Vogelkop and Raja Ampat belong to the Indonesian province of Papua Barat , the other islands to the province of Maluku Utara (North Moluccas ). Between Halmahera and Morotai there is a connection to the west to the Molucca Sea via the Morotaistraße (Selat Morotai) .
