Tacheng is a government district that belongs to the Ili Kazakh Autonomous District in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China .
Names
In Chinese, both the administrative district and its capital are called Tacheng. In Kazakh, the administrative district is called Tarbağatay (تارباعاتاي ايماعى / Тарбағатай аймағы), like the neighboring district in the East Kazakhstan region in Kazakhstan , and the capital is called Şәweşek (شاۋەشەك / Шәуешек). In Uighur, the government district is also called Tarbaigatay, the capital Qɵqək. In older literature there are also well-written place names such as Tchukuchak or Tschugutschak.

Tacheng has an area of 98,824 km².
It is located in the Djungarian Basin in the north of Ili. It borders Kazakhstan in the northwest.
Administrative division
At the district level, the administrative district is subordinate to two cities, four districts and one autonomous district:
- the city of Tacheng (塔 城市 Tǎchéng Shì).
- the city of Usu (乌苏 市 Wūsū Shì).
- the district of Dorbiljin (额敏 县 Émǐn Xiàn), main town: Emin (额敏 镇),
- the district of Qagantokay (裕民 县 Yùmín Xiàn), main town: Karabura municipality (哈拉布拉 镇),
- Shawan County (沙湾县 Shāwān Xiàn), capital: Sandaohezi Municipality (三 道 河 子 镇),
- the district of Toli (托里 县 Tuōlǐ Xiàn), capital: Greater municipality of Toli (托里 镇),
- the Mongolian Autonomous County of Hoboksar (和 布克赛尔 蒙古 自治县 Hébùkèsài'ěr Měnggǔ Zìzhìxiàn), main town: the greater municipality of Hoboksar (和 布克赛尔 镇).

economy
Tacheng used to be important for trade with Central Asia.
It is now a center of agriculture that focuses on cereal and cotton planting. There are also food processing and textile industries.
