Gulja ( Yining ) ( Kazakh :قۇلجا اۋدانى/ Құлжа ауданы / Qulja Awdanı ) is a district of the Ili Kazakh Autonomous District in the northwest of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in the People's Republic of China . Its main town is the large community Jelilyüzi (吉 里 于 孜 镇).

The Sultan Vais Khan Mausoleum ( Sutan Waisi han mazha ) has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China (6-294) since 2006 .

history

After 1876 the "Kuldscha area" was occupied by Russian troops under Konstantin Petrovich von Kaufmann and had to be returned to China in 1881.
