The city of Altay ( Chinese  阿勒泰 市 , Pinyin Ālètài Shì ; Uighur :ئالتاي شەھىرى Altay Xəⱨiri ; Kazakh التاي قالاسى Altay qalası ) is an independent city and the capital of the Altay administrative district in the Kazakh Ili Autonomous District in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China .

The stone figures and stone coffin tombs of Qiemuer Qieke (Qiemu'er Qieke shiren ji shiguan muqun 切 木 尔切克 石人 及 石棺 墓群) have been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China (5-191) since 2005 .

The large community of Beitun (北 屯镇) was spun off from the city of Altay on December 28, 2011 and transferred to the newly founded city of Beitun .
