Karamay is a prefecture-level city in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China . The name of the city is derived from a natural asphalt mountain in the northeast of the city. In 1955 the first oil well was extracted here, and today it is one of the city's sights. The administrative area of Karamay has an area of 7,734 km² and approx. 284,300 inhabitants (end of 2005), of which 76.6% Han Chinese , 14.7% Uighurs and 8.7% members of other, predominantly Turkic-speaking peoples.
Administrative structure
At the district level, the city is made up of four urban districts. These are:
- Karamay district (克拉玛依 区), 3,833 km², 181,871 inhabitants (2006), city center, seat of the city government;
- Dushanzi district (独山子 区), 400 km², 50,000 inhabitants;
- Baijiantan district (白碱滩区), 1,272 km², 50,000 inhabitants;
- Orku district (乌尔禾 区), 2,229 km², 10,000 inhabitants;
Others
After the founding of the People's Republic of China , Karamay was the country's first developed oil field. Karamay means "black oil" in the language of the Uighurs.
Karamay has a dry climate in summer that is up to 40 degrees Celsius. In winter the temperature can drop below minus 25 degrees.
