Ed Thrasher , actually Edward Lee Thrasher Jr. (Born March 7, 1932 in Glendale , California ; † August 5, 2006 in Big Bear Lake , California) was an American photographer and graphic artist . Record covers and film posters designed by him have made him known internationally since the 1960s.

Life

The son of a Los Angeles city ​​councilor , Thrasher began studying art and graphic design in the early 1950s following his military service in the Navy . He began his professional career in 1957 as an employee of the "Layout" department at Capitol Records , where he soon rose to leading positions.

In 1964 Thrasher moved to Reprise Records , where he was responsible for the design of numerous album releases until 1979 and became one of the most prominent and sought-after artists in this field. His record cover designs earned him a total of 12 nominations for the Grammy , which he finally won in 1975 together with Christopher Whorf for the album Come & Gone by Mason Proffit . Thrasher worked for Jimi Hendrix , Joni Mitchell , Grateful Dead and Van Morrison, among others . His graphic designs from this time are still considered to be a style-forming element in the genre.

One of the most photographed artists by Thrasher is Frank Sinatra , for whom he designed a number of album covers (including My Way 1969 and She Shot Me Down 1981) and for whose comeback album in 1973 he invented the title Ol'Blue Eyes Is Back .

In 1979, Thrasher own company, he in whose name among others in 1984 the design of movie posters and album art to Purple Rain by Prince designed.

From 1962 to 1983 Thrasher was married to actress Linda Gray .
