Location of the Subei Autonomous Okrug of the Mongols in Gansu

The Subei Autonomous Okrug of the Mongols ( Chinese  肃北 蒙古族 自治县 , Pinyin Sùběi Měnggǔzú Zìzhìxiàn ; Mongolian ᠰᠤᠪᠧᠢ ᠶᠢᠨ ᠮᠣᠩᠭᠣᠯ ᠥᠪᠡᠷᠲᠡᠭᠡᠨ ᠵᠠᠰᠠᠬᠤ ᠰᠢᠶᠠᠨ) belongs to the administrative area of the prefecture-level city of Jiuquan in northwest China's Gansu Province . Its area of 66,748 km² is divided into two roughly equal areas by the city of Yumen and Guazhou County . The northern of these two areas also represents the northernmost extension of the Gansu Province, borders on the state of Mongolia for 84.95 km in the north (the only external border of Gansu) and is thus inserted between the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and the Uyghur Autonomous Region Xinjiang . The political, economic and cultural center of Subei is the large community of Dangchengwan ; it is located in the southern part of the autonomous district. In Subei is the 5,798 m high Altun Shan, which gave the Altun Mountains its name. Subei is one of the most sparsely populated areas in China.

Administrative structure

The autonomous district of Subei of the Mongols consists of two large municipalities and one municipality (areas partly not precisely measured; population figures from 1994):

  • Large community of Dangchengwan (党 城 湾镇), 5 km², approx. 4,000 inhabitants;
  • Greater community Mazongshan (马鬃山镇), km² 20,000, about 870 residents;
  • Community Shibaocheng (石包城乡) km² 6910, about 1,190 inhabitants;

With the administrative reform and reorganization of the area structure in 2006, all municipalities except for Shibaocheng were dissolved. Today, Subei only consists of the large parishes of Dangchengwan and Mazongshan and the Shibaocheng parish. All areas and inhabitants of the other municipalities mentioned above were distributed among these three administrative units.

The former municipalities are:

  • Community Yanchiwan (盐池湾乡) 19,000 square kilometers, about 840 inhabitants;
  • Biegai municipality (别 盖 乡), 5,852 km², approx. 910 inhabitants;
  • Dangcheng municipality (党 城乡), 178 km², approx. 2,520 inhabitants;
  • Community Yu'erhong (鱼儿红乡), km² 3180, about 440 residents;
  • Mingshui municipality (明 水乡), 11,000 km², approx. 200 inhabitants.
