The Aksay Autonomous Okrug of the Kazakhs ( Chinese  阿克塞 哈萨克族 自治县 , Pinyin Ākèsài Hāsàkèzú Zìzhìxiàn ; Kazakh Ақсай Қазақ автономиялық ауданы / اقساي قازاق اۋتونومىيي الىق اۋدانى) belongs to the administrative area of ​​the prefecture-level city of Jiuquan in northwest China's Gansu Province . It occupies the entire south of the northwestern tip of the province and has an area of ​​31,374 km². In the north it borders on the independent city of Dunhuang and the Subei Autonomous County of the Mongols, in the south on the province of Qinghai and in the west on the administrative district of Kumul of the Uighur Autonomous Region of Xinjiang . The political, economic and cultural center of Aksay is the Hongliuwan community ; it is located in the north-central part of the autonomous region. With a population of almost 9,000, Aksay is one of the poorest districts in China.

Aksay is known as the "circle of returnees" in Gansu Province. A total of 348 households (around 2,200 people) who have returned to China from abroad live here. Of these, 213 households (1,179 people) are still related to Kazakhstan , 134 households (882 people) in Turkey , 25 households in Mongolia (131 people) and one household (eight people) in Saudi Arabia . Long-term abroad are 261 households (1,230 people) from Aksay, of which 153 households (494 people) are in Turkey, 63 households (337 people) in Kazakhstan and one household (six people) in Mongolia.

Administrative structure

Since the administrative reform in December 2006, the Aksay Autonomous County of the Kazakhs consists of only one large municipality and two municipalities:

  • Greater community Hongliuwan (红柳湾镇), center, seat of the county government;
  • Akqi municipality (阿克 旗 乡);
  • Alteng municipality (阿勒 腾 乡).

The previously existing communities of Heping 和平 乡, Minzhu 民主 乡, Tuanjie 团结 乡, Jianshe 建设 乡 and Duobagou Gemeinden Gemeinden 沟乡 were dissolved.
