Shiyan ( Chinese  十堰 市 , Pinyin Shíyàn shì ) is a district-free city in the northwest of the Chinese province of Hubei . Shiyan has an area of ​​23,727 km² and about 3.41 million inhabitants (2003); Population density: 143.72 inhabitants / km².

Shiyan is located on the northern foothills of the Wudang Mountains near the Wudang Shan National Park.

Administrative structure

Shiyan consists of two districts, five districts and one urban district:

  • Zhangwan District (张 湾区), 652 km², approx. 260,000 inhabitants (2003);
  • Maojian district (茅箭 区), 578 km², approx. 240,000 inhabitants (2003);

economy

Today Shiyan is one of the largest centers of the automobile industry in the People's Republic of China with 3.4 million inhabitants (2003). Until the founding of the PR China 2nd automobile factory (Chin. 中华人民共和国 第二 汽车 制造厂) In 1969 Shiyan was still a small village and then grew into a large city. Cars with the brand Dongfeng (Chin. 东风) have been produced in Shiyan since 1975. Machine parts and plastics or products of modern industry are also manufactured here.

A highway connects Shiyan with Xi'an and Wuhan . There is also an airport.
