Aviation clubs at the airfield

The Aero Club Krefeld eV was created in 2005 through the merger of the Luftsportverein Bayer Uerdingen eV and the Aero Club Krefeld 1950 eV. With around 250 members, it is one of the largest air sports clubs in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The glider fleet includes two training two -seater type ASK 21 and one single-seater type LS4-b . The LS7 and LS8 with a wingspan of 18 meters are single-seaters for ambitious competition pilots.

The motorized aircraft fleet consists of a touring motor glider ( SF25 Rotax-Falke ) and a motorized aircraft Robin DR 300 (D-EOBS).

The Association for Glider Flying Krefeld eV was founded in 1952 as the Becker & van Hüllen aviation group and has around 100 members, around 70 of which are active.

The glider fleet includes two two-seater gliders of the type Grob G 103 "Twin III Acro" (D-3697, D-4144) as well as three single-seater (one Discus 2b (D-8266), one Discus CS (D-0688) and one Astir CS 77 (D-4825)).

A Robin DR 300 motorized aircraft (D-EAEC), an ultra-light aerial sports device of the type B&F FK 9 (D-MVFS) and a take-off winch complete the inventory of the Verein für Segelflug eV

Airport festivals

In the inter-war period , performances took place on the Egelsberg. After the war years, the first flight day took place on July 19, 1953. Up to 20,000 people came to the “major flight days” in 1955, 1959, 1960 and 1962.

In 1969, an estimated 10,000 people came to the inauguration of the new "Egelsberg" airfield; they saw the national Czech aerobatic team.

On August 19, 1973, to mark the 600th anniversary of the city of Krefeld, a particularly lavish "large-scale flight day" took place. With the support of the Royal Air Force , a spectacular program was offered; Over 50,000 guests saw the screening of the nine-season Red Arrows .

Since then, “open days” have been held regularly (every two years) at the Krefeld-Egelsberg airfield.

The first German master in glider aerobatics after the Second World War was the Krefeld aerobatic pilot Sepp Tilling on his glass wing H-101 Salto , who prevailed against the 18 competitors.

Since 2003, the “Krefeld youth comparison flight” has been held annually in August as a target country competition. The first two winners represent the Krefeld youngsters at the North Rhine-Westphalia state competition.

Since 2007 every year in May the first round of the Lower Rhine Championship in distance gliding with over 40 aircraft takes place on the Egelsberg in Krefeld. The cross-country flight competition is held in the three classes "Large Class", "Club Class" and "Mixed Class".

In 2016, 2017 and 2019 the Kappes comparison flight was organized by the Aero Club Krefeld eV in May.
